Faithful Citizenship

We are in a presidential election year, and the Church has
many resources for us to form our consciences. These will
be in our bulletins/websites/social media each week until the
election. Our responsibility, as Catholics is for each of us to
form our own consciences, to stand for issues and not
candidates, and to live our faith publicly and civilly. This
week our bulletin will have information on civil dialog, which
is essential in expressing our values. Please take a look.
And follow Diocese of Duluth OFfice of Social Apostolate on
Facebook.

Editorial: Marriage season is here

Amid all the splendor of a northern Minnesota summer, don’t miss one of its most beautiful aspects: weddings. It’s the time of year many couples choose to begin their lives together.

In our diocesan vocations prayer, alongside vocations to the priesthood, consecrated life, and permanent diaconate, we pray so often at Masses for an increase in “holy marriages in our diocese.” Society is undergoing a crisis of marriage and family. But it’s also true that the sacrament of marriage brings hope to society.

Interfaith advocacy for the poor and vulnerable makes an impact in 2023

Inside the Capitol

Catholic social teaching espouses a preferential option for the poor and vulnerable. In the public policy context, this means that policies should first be evaluated based on how they will affect those most in distress (Matthew 25). It also means that addressing the needs of the poor and vulnerable should be one of the most important priorities in the legislative process, at whatever level of government.

Diocese Events

The Diocese of Duluth will be discontinuing its televised Mass on WDIO-TV/WIRT-TV effective April 1. While this change will require some adjustment, live stream broadcasts of Mass from local parishes on the Internet are widely available, as are broadcasts on radio and cable television such as EWTN. Please let us know if you or a loved one need help accessing one of these broadcasts, and particularly if Communion visits and the other sacraments are needed for our homebound faithful. A complete list of live stream Masses from the Duluth Diocese is available at www.dioceseduluth.org/live-stream-masses.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE
I have set before you life and death, the blessings and the curse. Choose life, then.
It is hard to believe it has been almost a year since we worked together to pray for the end to abortion.  With Our Lady's intercession, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, and the 40 Days for Life Prayer Warriors, perhaps we can turn the tide and prevent further loss of LIFE in the womb and walk with moms who need our prayers and support, by Peacefully Praying at the Women's Health Center, the abortion facility in Duluth.
40 Days for Life Prayerful Vigil Campaign is September 25 - November 3, 2024. The website to sign up for prayer vigil hours is up and running and can be found at https://www.40daysforlife.com/en/duluth.

If you feel the call to be a leader in the campaign, please attend a meeting on August 12, 6pm, St. Benedict's Library or call Kathy at 218-390-8560.  Thank you for your past support.

“Do This in Memory of Me” presented by King’s House Retreat Staff

Experience King’s House at the height of summer when the flowers are in bloom and the sunsets are beautiful.  Jesus, present at The Last Supper shared with His disciples the gift of His presence as He becomes the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. The disciples remembered many things from that night. It is these memories that will guide our retreat. Includes Mass, personal prayer time, Reconciliation, Scriptural Rosary and a healing service. Per person: $50 deposit at registration and Suggested Donation of $195; includes 2 overnights, private accommodations and 5 meals; Register online at www.kingshouse.com or call 763-682-1394.

Serenity 11th Step Retreat for Men & Women; October 4-6, 2024, presented by Fr. Bill Sheehan, OMI

Step 11: “Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.”

One of the underlying principles of 12-Step programs is that nothing happens by mistake. Members are encouraged to recognize their Higher Power, to listen to that Higher Power, and allow their self to be inspired by this Higher Power in their journey of recovery. This is achieved through prayer and meditation. Fr. Bill Sheehan, OMI, will offer retreatants the practice of centering prayer as an expression of the 11th Step. He will present what he describes as the Welcoming Prayer Practice which is a way of dealing with afflictive emotions and discuss Bill W’s letter regarding Emotional Sobriety. If time permits, he will offer tips on the practice of forgiveness. Per person: $50 deposit at registration and Suggested Donation of $250; includes 2 overnights, private accommodations and 5 meals; Register online at www.kingshouse.com or call 763-682-1394.

A Midweek Day Away:  Wednesday, October 16; 8:30 am to 3:30 pm

We have restructured our day retreat to include more time for personal prayer and quiet reflection. There will be one conference on the holiness of the saints, a guided holy hour and guided meditation, and the opportunity for confession. This is YOUR time with the Lord. The meditations and liturgies are offered as optional events should you choose to attend. Mass will be celebrated to conclude our day. Lunch is included. Suggested donation: $60 per person. Register online at Kingshouse.com/events/
